By achieving milestones in their respective industries, they are encouraging women in China and across the world to <strong>break through the glass ceiling.<\/strong> As China\u2019s economy is developing and the country has digitalised beyond belief, countless doors have opened to women in modern China. But it hasn\u2019t always been like this &#8211; let\u2019s take a brief look at the journey to get there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Women&#8217;s experience in the past<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Confucian philosophy influenced women\u2019s position in society due to the importance it places on <strong>family virtues<\/strong>. In Imperial China, women were seen as the <strong>subordinate gender<\/strong> in social, political, and family life. Footbinding was a common practice to show off a woman\u2019s status, while concubines were a key part of China\u2019s Imperial society. Both were only outlawed in the 20th century. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mao\u2019s famous phrase that <strong>&#8220;women hold up half the sky&#8221;<\/strong> seemed to suggest that the founding of the People\u2019s Republic of China would be the start of a new era. However, the fact that men were still the preferred gender was highlighted when the <strong>one-child policy<\/strong> came into effect in the late 1970s. Traditionally, the family line can only be continued by men and women leave their parent\u2019s home to move in with their husband&#8217;s family. It is unsurprising then that the one-child policy created one of the <strong>world\u2019s worst gender imbalances<\/strong> as many families favoured male children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How has it changed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>But, to what extent do <a href=\"https:\/\/daoinsights.com\/opinions\/changing-attitudes-towards-womens-roles-in-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">traditional gender roles<\/a> still influence today\u2019s society?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with the rest of the world, women\u2019s rights have taken a turn for the better, however, social pressures still exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The term <a href=\"https:\/\/daoinsights.com\/works\/audi-backs-chinas-leftover-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u2018leftover women\u2019<\/a> or \u2018sh\u00e8ngn\u01da\u2019 (\u5269\u5973) has been widely used to describe women in their late 20s who are still single. While the phrase is going out of fashion, the idea that <strong>women must be married by a certain age<\/strong> still prevails. Cu\u012b h\u016bn (\u50ac\u5a5a) or <strong>marriage pushing<\/strong> is a common phenomenon and young women <a href=\"https:\/\/daoinsights.com\/works\/dating-app-tantan-highlights-generational-divide-about-marriage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">face considerable pressure from their parents<\/a> and relatives to get married. Marriage markets are still very common in parks in Chinese cities where relatives seek out a partner for their single children. They come armed with a CV-like advert containing their children\u2019s educational status, work, income and height.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What about women\u2019s roles in the workplace?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China has one of the <strong>highest labour force participation rates for women<\/strong> in the Asia-Pacific region with women making up 43.7% of workers in 2019. And China is home to two-thirds of the world\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/daoinsights.com\/news\/fortunes-most-powerful-women-list-features-11-chinese-businesswomen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">top women billionaires<\/a>, with a higher number of female entrepreneurs than the United Kingdom and the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, women are still nowhere to be seen in the senior levels of China\u2019s political system with just <strong>one woman holding a position in the 25-person Politburo<\/strong>, the Party\u2019s top decision-making body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the implementation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/daoinsights.com\/news\/china-expected-to-face-population-decline-as-birth-rate-falls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u2018two-child policy\u2019<\/a>, China has made great progress when it comes to <strong>maternity leave<\/strong>. The national legislation allows for a <strong>minimum of 98 days<\/strong>, while some provinces allow for up to 190 days as seen in Hainan and Henan. Still, companies often discriminate on the basis of future pregnancies. In addition, on top of their workload, many women are still expected to <strong>take on domestic tasks<\/strong> once they get home and there is little protection for those who face domestic abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China has had a <strong>\u2018#MeToo\u2019 movement<\/strong>, but it has been different in nature to other parts of the world. Still, much of the recent discussion about women\u2019s rights and equality in China also originated on social media as users share their thoughts on trends, media, campaigns and news stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Discussion about women&#8217;s rights in the media<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>TV shows and films have played a major role in igniting discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, the TV shows <em>Sisters Who Make Waves<\/em> \u4e58\u98ce\u7834\u6d6a\u7684\u59d0\u59d0 and <em>Nothing But Thirty<\/em> \u4e09\u5341\u800c\u5df2 examined the social pressures associated with women in their thirties. They were both widely viewed and provoked extensive discussions on Weibo. A hashtag relating to <em>Sisters Who Make Waves<\/em> gained over <strong>45 billion views<\/strong> and the show even formed the backbone of a <a href=\"https:\/\/daoinsights.com\/works\/audi-backs-chinas-leftover-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">campaign from Audi<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later in the year, WeChat owner Tencent released China\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/daoinsights.com\/news\/tencent-video-releases-first-female-monologue-tackling-pressures-on-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">first-ever female monologue<\/a> <em>Hear Her<\/em> \u542c\u89c1\u5979\u8bf4. Its first episode examined the unfair expectations that Chinese women face to have a slim face, small waist, thin legs, wear makeup and dress well. In response, many netizens agreed that <strong>beauty standards should be redefined by individuals<\/strong> not society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, the movies <em>My Sister<\/em> \u6211\u7684\u59d0\u59d0 and <em>Hi, Mom<\/em> \u4f60\u597d\uff0c\u674e\u7115\u82f1 have <a href=\"https:\/\/daoinsights.com\/news\/new-release-my-sister-sparks-moral-debate-about-family-values-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inspired conversations<\/a> about women\u2019s roles within the family and the continuing gender preference for men. With an unusually female-focused plot and a female director, <em>Hi, Mom<\/em> was hugely successful in the Chinese box office. It also surpassed <em>Wonder Woman<\/em> to become the <strong>top-grossing film of all time with a female director<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">China&#8217;s \u2018She-Economy\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignright is-type-wp-embed is-provider-dao-insights wp-block-embed-dao-insights\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"2OJx16XvNi\"><a href=\"https:\/\/daoinsights.com\/events\/live-event-understanding-chinas-she-economy-in-2021\/\">Live Event &#8211; Understanding China\u2019s \u2018She-Economy\u2019 in 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Live Event &#8211; Understanding China\u2019s \u2018She-Economy\u2019 in 2021&#8221; &#8212; Dao Insights\" src=\"https:\/\/daoinsights.com\/events\/live-event-understanding-chinas-she-economy-in-2021\/embed\/#?secret=qyPHonAOsE#?secret=2OJx16XvNi\" data-secret=\"2OJx16XvNi\" width=\"520\" height=\"293\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As Chinese women\u2019s consumption power has increased, the so-called \u2018<strong>She-Economy\u2019<\/strong> has emerged. In the run-up to <strong>International Women\u2019s Day<\/strong> or <a href=\"https:\/\/daoinsights.com\/news\/douyin-holds-queens-day-festival-for-international-womens-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u2018Queens Day\u2019<\/a> as it is known in China, e-commerce platform <a href=\"https:\/\/daoinsights.com\/news\/tmall-report-highlights-role-of-she-economy-in-china\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tmall released a report<\/a> highlighting how women have promoted a <strong>new wave of consumption<\/strong>. Indeed, 80% of Tmall\u2019s top new brands in 2020 were focused on female consumer\u2019s needs. Additionally, female entrepreneurs run over half of the clothing brands on the platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to consumer behaviour, Chinese women have shown that they are exerting their <strong>increased confidence through their style<\/strong>. One example is the popularity of the minimalistic <a href=\"https:\/\/daoinsights.com\/opinions\/chinas-sexually-frigid-fashion-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u2018sexually frigid\u2019 style<\/a> which has seen women adopt shapeless and simple clothes in order to express their individuality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The short life of brand history in China and the numerous choices available to Chinese female consumers mean that they are <strong>quick to dismiss brands that make superficial or insensitive campaigns<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brands leverage International Women&#8217;s Day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past years, many brands have been <strong>leveraging International Women\u2019s Day<\/strong> to resonate with their female audience in china.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cosmetics brand <a href=\"https:\/\/daoinsights.com\/news\/proya-and-china-womens-daily-launch-viral-video-for-womens-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Proya and China Women\u2019s Daily<\/a> released a viral video campaign <strong>\u2018Gender is not a borderline, prejudice is\u2019<\/strong> starring famous rapper Yu Zhen. The video challenged assumptions based on long-standing gender roles and gained huge traction online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/daoinsights.com\/works\/the-chinese-lingerie-brand-taking-on-womens-beauty-standards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Neiwai\u2019s \u2018no body is nobody\u2019 campaign<\/a>, which has run for the last two years, <strong>provoked a discussion about beauty standards<\/strong> by featuring women of different body shapes, ages and personalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/focus.cbbc.org\/five-brands-winning-this-years-international-womens-day-china\/#.YImtvkhKj9E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Perfect Diary and Dior<\/a> picked out <strong>inspiring female celebrities<\/strong> in their digital campaigns, while <a href=\"https:\/\/daoinsights.com\/works\/challenging-gender-bias-is-key-theme-in-womens-day-campaigns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tmall created an interactive bullet-screen wall<\/a> in Shanghai in which passers-by could stand on a podium to <strong>challenge gender-biased comments.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luxury e-commerce platform <strong>Net-a-Porter<\/strong> chose a different approach to Proya and Tmall. Net-a-Porter decided to celebrate rather than to expose. They invited actress Tan Zhuo to shoot a creative short film that depicted the <strong>outstanding moments in women\u2019s ordinary lives<\/strong>. The video attracted over 21,000 views on WeChat, including comments such as \u201cevery woman has powers that no one should underestimate\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of these International Women\u2019s Day campaigns were shared widely on social media and showed the way in which some brands are moving towards a <strong>more realistic portrayal of Chinese women<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does the future hold?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>From birth to the workplace, from the political sphere to the home, women in China still face significant challenges in terms of gender equality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But they are also living longer, have access to more job opportunities and are graduating from university in greater numbers than ever before, leaving bright hope for the next generation of women in China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the last few years, women\u2019s issues have often been trending on Chinese social media sites as the topic has become more widely discussed across society.
