This week, Chinese clothing brand Bananain (\u8549\u5185) put this line of thinking to the test. Instead of slick, agency-crafted taglines, <strong>Bananain invited the Xinjiang cotton farmers who grow its clothes&#8217; cotton to describe it in their own words<\/strong>. Advice that forces you to examine what you truly know. Within these ad lines there are signals of top-tier quality.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Xinjiang cotton has also come under criticism in the west for links to the oppression of Uyghur minorities. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-china-56519411\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Notably Nike and H&amp;M refused to use Xinjiang cotton in their products<\/a> over exactly these concerns. Boycotts from Chinese consumers followed.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The issue was divisive. <a href=\"https:\/\/daoinsights.com\/news\/can-hm-regain-the-chinese-market-after-boycotts-over-xinjiang-cotton-comments\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Now, within China, support for brands using Xinjiang cotton can be seen as a consumer stance, one sharp with the fumes of patriotism<\/a>. So while politically charged outside of China, proud use of Xinjiang cotton can strengthen domestic consumers\u2019 affinity for a brand.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not an investigation into the provenance of Bananain\u2019s cotton. Nor is it an attempt to scrutinise their supply chain.
